I really wanted to understand why Tapiwa Samanyanga was so bold to say that he accepted nothing else besides a slot at the top. Samanyanga reiterated that “no one belongs on top forever”.
For the 2 decades I have dealt with musicians, I have come to believe their high superiority appetite. Each and every individual musician before release feels his/her art is what the world is waiting for. It’s positive in a way because it boosts confidence but there must be enough research to justify. It’s risky if self judgement is taking centre stage without any feedback from a reasonable sample. The way the music industry is being undermined as a chance business has led to the downfall of so many talented musicians.
So does Tapiwa has appropriate backing for the treasonous move he has pronounced?
I was prompted to do some background checks. My eagerness was to understand where really this young man ejected from, who Tapiwa rubbed shoulders with and who probably exposed him? This kind of bravery wouldn’t come out of nothing. Musicians tremble with lack of confidence, hardly can they speak fluently if their music has not hit.
I discovered Tapiwa was in the safe hands of Mama Filo the king maker who took Jah Prayzer to the promised land of Canaan. It was unfortunate that Tapiwa collided with Baba Harare in Mama Filo’s stable. The time Baba Harare was taking notes under Mama Filo is when Tapiwa arrived. Weather Mama Filo applied the accounting sequence first in first out (FIFO) I am not sure but it appears so. Baba Harare is doing well now after parting ways with Mama Filo.
Tapiwa appreciates the time he interacted with Baba Harare and all the skills imparted to him. Baba Harare became a brother whom Tapiwa extended some of his lyrics that won after all. Tapiwa boasts it’s a public secret that he was behind Baba Harare’s initial rise.
In 2020 when he experimented with a Kanindo beat on the song Sisi Gladys, Tapiwa received good reviews. Tapiwa worked with Shantel as a backing vocalist. Though Moses Rwizi had recorded Kanindo earlier on, Tapiwa felt he had a Zimbabwean infusion that sounds original. Shantel broke away to challenge Tapiwa with the same genre, she took Tapiwa’s song and collaborated with Baba Harare. Tapiwa is releasing the original song anyway.
Tapiwa declares he is the King of Kanindo and plans are afoot to bring the Kenyan Kanindo guru Mr Ongengo for a collaboration.
I sampled Tapiwa’s forthcoming songs from his next album that will be released before year end. I am very sure if well distributed and marketed Jah Prayzer will finally have a competitor. I appreciate that Andy Muridzo has a good vocal but I am afraid Tapiwa has come to dislodge these top musicians with deep lyrics and complimentary beat.
The music matrix is not an easy one though. Gatekeepers press, promoters and DJs have a role that can adversely affect the ambitious Tapiwa. Some top musicians are now bribing their stay at the top without any justified content. The ground is not levelled based on talent but how much you would have provided for the gatekeeper’s family or small house. The brown cheque is ruling, without circumventing the system you will wallop in poverty with your talent
Despite, it’s game on Tapiwa is determined that by the end of the year his music will be rocking radio stations and the club circuit. FMMS JOURNALS
