Opinion by Fred Farai Nyakudanga
Mahere and Wicknell Chivhayo's actions may stem from good intentions, but their approaches aren’t sustainable. By taking matters into their own hands to reach out to artists, they are inadvertently perpetuating a culture of informality and patronage.
Fadzai Mahere has expressed a differing opinion on Leonard Zhakata's actions, while at the same time, the opposition leadership is jostling for opposition funding and receiving high-value motor vehicles in Parliament. The donation of motor vehicles by Sir Wicknell Chivhayo sounds like a good move, but how sustainable is this scheme, considering a new entry who is expecting to earn a living out of music?
The real issue here is the state of our economy and the arts industry. Our iconic artists end up struggling to make ends meet, and it's unacceptable considering their hard work. The society owes musicians and it's a matter of policy that is needed to direct the society to pay musicians.
Moreover, despite their differing political affiliations, both Mahere and Chivhayo are failing to advocate for institutional ownership and formal structures that benefit the broader society.
By not promoting a more structured and equitable approach, they are ultimately doing a disservice to the community and undermining the development of robust institutions that can sustainably support the arts and other sectors.
Having influential figures like Mahere and Chivhayo in politics could indeed bring about positive change in our parliament. With their influence, we could see more policies focused on self-sustainability and support systems. This could involve initiatives that promote economic growth, reduce reliance on external aid, and foster a sense of community and cooperation.
We need a more comprehensive approach to supporting our arts industry, one that promotes artistic freedom, provides adequate funding, and recognizes the value of art in our society. Anything less is a disservice to our artists and our culture.
