Carlton released a well arranged music single Harare in January this year 2021. The song is a masterpiece that has been on my playlist ever since. The single prompted me to dig into his past because it has all ingredients that proves there is a well groomed musician behind. After listening to different releases by seasoned musicians I am wondering why he isn’t on top too.
The art behind relating Harare in the song he called Harare is exciting. Carlton sings about how Harare gets you carried away, there are beautiful girls who demand real pleasure. If you are not careful you will forget your core responsibilities and chase after them without sleeping “haurare”. He sings, let your friend or cousin enjoy soon or later he will know it’s Harare.
As early as he was doing form two in 1999 the inborn talented Carlton Muparutsa was already performing on stage. Carlton Muparutsa comes from the music dynastic family of Muparutsas of Manicaland. Music is in his veins.
When he was growing up Carlton would make music from empty cans and boxes in the backyard. Carlton says he always had some rhythms he played Impromptus and people would dance. This did not spare his mother’s old pots and cups.
Carlton has played with several bands as a drummer in the last 22 years that include Africa Revenge of the Wanga fame, Ernest Tanga Wekwa Sando, The Runn Family and many others. You can distinctly pick Carlton’s hand from the recent releases of Sulu Chimbetu where he is currently playing.
My question to Carlton was “are you preparing for a solo career now”? He responded!.
“Music is something I value so much, from the time I became professional, I have been composing music together with my cousins. So it is not about having a band, it’s about sharing with the world and doing something that I will not regret when my hair is grey. I would want to just look back and smile knowing that I got to share my creativity, emotions and expressions through art.“
Carlton’s greatest achievement in music is when a song speaks to the the society. He also believes his purpose is to create, contribute and impart musical skills to uplift or inspire generations.
