Selmor's New Year's Single Provokes Thoughtfulness

The festive bar had already been set in the charts and club circuits. Most musicians had fought to be on top to please the expectations of their fans. The demands of the Christmas holiday are taken seriously by musicians. It’s normal that every fan expects his favourite musician to rivalry and offer a competing song or album.  This was not so with Selmor Mtukudzi's new single Gore Idzva. It is a song that came to complement all the hit songs from Allan Chimbetu, Sulu, Winky D, Andy Muridzo the young boy Heyman and many others who released late last year.

Gore Idzva is a single that was released on the earliest minutes of 2021 bringing in the missing aspect of our entertainment, meditation agency.

I have always argued that the homogeneous society is never in one situation at any given time and hence our music  must also vary to meet the different needs of our people. I have observed the inclination of most of our music to partying and dance. Our minds also need some food as much as our feet do. It is highly commendable of Selmor Mtukudzi to remember that our society needs to reflect and hence sharpen, improvise or adapt to situations that may have been undesirable.

Gore Idzva is a hope that everyone would need after going through difficult times. Because this song was released on new year it really does not mean it’s a new year song only. It is so broad in wishing for a new season, new fortunes. It is a prayer to be guided into better times.

The way Selmor executed her art is so marvellous such that you really go through your mind and try to move obstacles and clear your mind. You would appreciate that you survived a tough year. Questions would also arise, why you survived through when others failed. Selmor's vocal application on Gore Idzva proves her talent is abundant. Mrs Gwenzi commented how Selmor's vocal prowness on the song makes the song a classic

. She narrated the loss of her father in 2017. She went on to say how it has become so easy to talk about it now. Mrs Gwenzi admitted her father was a pillar of  strength in her life.

I had the guts to ask Selmor why she slowed down instead of matching her colleagues whose songs are favourites at parties. Her reply convinced me that she is a musician who is ready to serve the society in her own understanding.

She said “ Fred when I make a song it is not driven by competition but content for the people”.

I regarded her highly considering the rush in the music circles to have a trending song at any cost, at times without any meaningful massage to the society. Rewinding back to yesteryear we had Marshall Munhumumwe who sang music worth listening to in the environment of the family. You would get one or two words that would counsel you.

I urge you the reader to listen to the song so as to be renewed. We had a tough year in 2020 because of the Covid 19 pandemic. We lost our relatives we lost income especially musicians whose live shows are still banned. Covid is real we are still in danger so let’s mask up and practice social distancing when we are in public. Thank you Selmor for casting hope to our strained society.

In loving memory of Mrs. Josephine Machuma (Nee Matongo)

Written by Fred Farai Nyakudanga   Mrs. Machuma played a pivotal role in shaping my Christian values and that of many during her time as a Sunday School teacher at St. Stephen United Methodist Church in the early 80s. Her catechism teachings strengthened my faith in the birth and death of Jesus Christ, and her picturesque illustrations of God’s omnipotence and omniscience remain vivid in my mind. As a dedicated teacher with stints at Zengeza 5 and 8 Primary Schools, Mrs. Machuma was known for her blunt yet nurturing approach. She would candidly address shortcomings, and her passion for education was evident. Many students, including myself, benefited from her guidance, and I’m sure many share my sentiments about her calling to educate. Together with her husband, Mr. Shepherd Machuma, the family embodied the good teachings of John Wesley. Their union, bound by vows of love and commitment, was a testament to the power of marriage. Even in separation, their love remains unwaver...

Greener Pastures Do Not Secure A Fat Cow

Written by Fred Farai Nyakudanga Just like cows seeking greener pastures, humans are drawn to opportunities that promise better living standards. However, I pose a critical question: do greener pastures truly guarantee prosperity if the underlying conditions are flawed? Perhaps the lack of progress is not due to the absence of opportunities, but rather the result of haphazard approaches, poor planning, and neglected resources. In the pursuit of a better life, many Africans seek opportunities in diaspora, enticed by promises of higher salaries and improved living standards. Yet, I firmly believe that true fulfillment and lasting impact can only be achieved by addressing the underlying conditions that hinder our progress in our own autonomous land – a land where we have territorial integrity. These underlying conditions include : 1. Absent value creation mechanisms : Failing to harness value from our resources and talents, instead relying on others for validation. 2. Disunity : Lac...

United Methodist Church: A Path of Continuous Improvement

Written by Fred Farai Nyakudanga  As a product of the United Methodist Church, I've come to realize the immense value of the administrative, business and leadership skills that the church imparts. Initially, I didn't appreciate these aspects, but after exploring other denominations, I returned to the United Methodist Church, recognizing its exceptional leadership development opportunities. The church's reporting system has had a profound impact on my self-development, and the process of worship, family ministering, and starting new churches has equipped me with replicable skills that I've applied to my daily life. Through the United Methodist Church, I've developed strong decision-making skills, strategic thinking, and effective communication. These skills have, in turn, fostered my commitment to transparency and social justice, which are now core values that I uphold in all my endeavors. I've come to expect accountability and fairness in any group or associa...
